The city of Hanford offers agricultural and craft fairs, a racetrack, and a drive-in theater, as well as a variety of shops, restaurants and other commercial businesses. The city of Corcoran is home to the notable California State Prison.   Every year, Kings County holds the annual Kings County Homecoming Celebration tin memory of the pioneers who first settled the San Joaquin Valley in the county. Kings County History

Native Americans including the Tachi-Yokut tribe lived in the area that later became Kings County for many thousands of years, In 1877, the tracks of the Southern Pacific Railroad brought additional growth and new arrivals from around the world. In 1880, a dispute over land titles between settlers and the Southern Pacific Railroad resulted in a bloody gun battle on a farm northwest of Hanford, known as the ‘Mussel Slough Tragedy.’  In 1893, a portion of Northern Tulare County was divided to form Kings County and in 1909, a portion of Fresno County was added to the northwest portion of Kings County. In 1928, oil was discovered in the Kettleman Hills of Kings County, becoming one of the most productive oil fields in the country.

U.S. involvement in World War II led to the establishment of Lemoore Army Airfield for training and defense.  In 1961, the U.S. Navy opened NAS Lemoore about 10 miles west of the earlier site. The completion of the California Aqueduct in the early 1970s brought needed water for agriculture and domestic use to the west side of Kings County.  Historic sites include Kingston, Mussel Slough Tragedy, El Adobe de Los Robles Rancho built by Daniel Rhoads, Vaca Adobe, and Cox & Clark Trading Post and Steamboat Landing.

Major highways in King County include I- 5, SR 33, SR 41, SR 43, SR 137, SR 198, and SR 269.  Hanford Municipal Airport is a general aviation airport located just southeast of Hanford. The nearest major airport is Visalia Municipal Airport, which offers has domestic flights from Visalia – located 35 miles from the center of Kings County.  Another major airport is Fresno Yosemite International Airport, which offers international and domestic flights from Fresno – located 48 miles from the center of Kings County.
